President’s Report
MARCH 2014

SPAC is situated 68 kilometers south of Davao city at Barangay Camanchiles Matanao, Davao del Sur. The college fronts the national highway that connects the progressive city of Digos and the town of Bansalan. This situation of our location makes SPAC very accessible to students and parents alike. First class buses and the latest commuter vans in the market today are perfect means of transportation for our students, parents and visitors when they come to study or visit SPAC.

It was only in 1994 when SMA or Southern Mindanao Academy was given the permit by the government to operate as a college, now called as South Philippine Adventist College. That is barely 20 years ago. But despite of its young age as a college, the Lord has been consistently visible as the source of the many successes of the college.

This report is a testimony of how faith can transform  small things into  big things when placed in the hands of the Almighty. This is the secret of SPAC.

1.  To make SPAC a real “feel” to our students, 29% percent of our teaching workforce are below 35 years of age while 60% are 40 years old and below. This is a fact that SPAC is really serious for the education of the young. It is a balanced of two horizons of workforce.

In the Academic standpoint of SPAC, SPAC continues to shine on in many respects of the academic challenges under the guidance of the Almighty.

At times when enrolment in many colleges and universities posed a great challenge at these critical times, SPAC has sustained a fairly good increase of enrolment every semester or school year.

Academy Now Level III Accredited Status This year, SPAC Academy has finally been granted level III accreditation status by ACSCU-AAI under FAAP.  At present, our Academy is the only Adventist secondary school in the Philippines to have been given this status – the highest accreditation status for secondary education. Our academy is also best known for its yearly science investigatory (research) project for 4th year students. Last year, participants of this project had their scientific outputs exhibited at the Gaisano Grandmall, Digos City.

September 2013 LET Results.  In September of 2013, SPAC was blessed again with impressive ratings in the Licensure Examination for Teachers for the 2013 batch of our education graduates.  Out of the 13 Secondary Education graduates, 10 passed (76.92%); and out of the 3 Elementary Education graduates, 2 passed (66.67%).  The national passing rates for the Secondary Education and Elementary Education are 39.61% and 27.78%, respectively.

Offering of Kindergarten Program with the Department of Education. SPAC never rest on her laurels, it follows biblical prescription, “Occupy till I come.” On September 12, 2013, the Department of Education issued Government Permit 004 s. 2013 to SPAC to operate its Kindergarten program effective SY 2013-2014. Application of permit has been submitted to the DepEd for the next school year’s operation.

The elementary department is now a new addition to SPAC.  With highly qualified and dedicated teachers, our elementary department continues to produce topnotchers in the achievement tests conducted by the Education Department of SPUC- Davao Mission every year.

Application for Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology.

This 2014, another two-fold blessings from God came to SPAC. After so much prayer, dedication and hard work, the members of the International Board of Education through the Education Department of SSD have approved the application of SPAC for Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology programs during their on-site visit for the said application. These new programs will be handled by highly competent CPA teachers who are mostly graduates of AUP and other prestigious institutions in the country. Be the next CPA or Certified Public Accountant.

Just recently, CHED XI has also approved the application of the same for its BS in Accountancy and BS in Accounting Technology programs effective June 2014.

Community Programs

SPAC stands out in its commitment to help build our community outside of the school in terms of livelihood and literacy programs for many years. In fact,  last January 2014, SPAC kicked off the offering of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) which is a program of the Department of Education for the less fortunate children and adults who would like to be educated and prepared for DepEd’s equivalency and accreditation program.  This is funded by DepEd but manned and operated by the College through its CES Office in coordination with the Teacher Education Department. At present, we have 83 students enrolled in this program.

Journals, Publications and Research presenters

Aside from the Investigatory Project Journal, SPAC has released the SPAC Faculty Research Journal and SPAC Undergraduate Research Journal. These journals are now ready for viewing and reading at our website. At SPAC, we now take research second to none.

Our professors from the Theology Department, Pastor Ephraim Perral (Chair) and Mr. Cristopher Luaya, were chosen this year as research presenters, and the only among Adventist Colleges in Mindanao, at the prestigious Theological Forum held at AIIAS last October 2013. Pastor Ephraim Perral is soon to publish a theological booklet for fund raising purposes.

And speaking of a research presenter, a fresh graduate of SPAC in BS Computer Science, Jevan Lavador, made SPAC proud for being one of the presenters in the highly innovative and mind boggling forum at the Mindanao Conference for IT students 2014 on January 20, 2014 held at the Davao Promotion and Recreation Center . To God be the Glory!

A former president of SPAC, Dr Arceli Rosario has authored the 2014 devotional book  for juniors, The Encounters (Published by PPH). Though no longer working at SPAC, but her heart remains at SPAC. She gives all her royalty from her book  for the amount of  ph109,000.00 to SPAC last February 2014. To God be the glory! What an amazing encounter!

Mr. Ruben Zapico, a theology instructor, anchors a 1-hour regular Sunday morning health and gospel program on 103.1 Gold FM, Digos City. Due to public demand, this program is simulcasted in over eight (8) sister FM stations in Mindanao. This program is sponsored by a local NGO. SPAC is now on air.  God is good!

Last November 2013, Mr. Roxie V. Pido, one of the teachers in the theology department and now the Director for Advancement and Publications of SPAC, co-authored a textbook entitled, In Search of Meaning: A Textbook on Introduction to General Philosophy. The other co-author is  Jesse R. Songcayawon of AUP. This textbook is published and distributed by Books Atbp. Publishing Corporation since November 2013 for national circulation.

They said one of the highest dreams of a researcher is to publish his/her paper in an international journal.  This year God has brought another breakthrough to SPAC.   The research paper entitled “Spontaneity:  The Secret Ingredient of Learning” has been accepted for publication in IGI Global’s Encyclopedia of Education and Technology in a Changing Society (California, USA).  This is authored by Dr. Francisco Cua (Hongkong), Dr. Sarah Stein (Ontago University, New Zealand) and Mrs. Alevir P. Pido, SPAC, Philippines.

In Music

SPAC is best known for its par excellence in music. SPAC continues to making Christian music dynamic and relevant as a way to advance our students’ musical skills and discover their music potential. SPAC is blessed with lyricists, composers and naturally gifted singers. Theme songs for our week of prayer sessions are mostly composed by our students. Our chorale and individual singers are known for its distinct and angelic sound or voices.
